Q Instructor Training in Portland, July 2016

Last week we had three courses held in Portland, OR at the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) Lab. These were not your typical run-of-the-mill Q Grader courses, rather they were for maintenance of the Q Instructor Program. The Coffee Quality Institute has a strong initiative to create and advance instructors from different regions worldwide. So instructors from around the world gathered to keep their skills sharp and qualifications up-to-date.

Q Assistant Instructor Course July 25-27:

DSC0117813 candidates from Korea, China, Thailand, Australia, Ethiopia, Italy, The UK, USA, Philippines and Mexico were chosen from our Q Instructor application process. This was the first time a member from Ethiopia joined our Q Assistant Instructor Course in Portland so we were very excited to welcome him in. There is only one of these courses given by CQI annually and a waiting list is already developing for next year's course.

During this training, participants were asked to execute the following:

  • Perform teaching exercises
  • Learn the rules and reporting for Q Grader courses
  • Complete a cupping calibration to prove their personal skill as a Q Grader

These students must now go on to complete practical assignments as an Assistant to a lead Q Instructor to eventually be approved as a lead themselves.

DSC01204Q Arabica Instructor Calibration July 28-29:

Nine Q Arabica Instructors from Mexico, Honduras, Kenya, USA and Switzerland attended this course. They were Lead Instructors who must calibrate every 2 years to prove their cupping skills as Q Graders. This calibration also serves as a meeting for Q instructors to get updates and training on new policies and procedures.

A Robusta Instructor Calibration July 30:

Seven Q Robusta Instructors AND Robusta Instructor candidates from Mexico, Kenya, USA, Korea, Philippines and Guatemala met to calibrate and have a meeting much like the above description of Arabica Instructor calibration.

The next instructor calibrations will take place in January of 2017 and will continue to evolve with our course materials.
