At Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), we look for opportunities to recognize individuals who not only embody our mission but also elevate it to new heights. Today, it's our pleasure to honor Johan Kwe, our CQI Educator of the Year for 2024.

Johan Kwe isn't just an educator; he's a source of inspiration within the coffee community. His journey with CQI began in 2017 when he embarked on the path to becoming a Q Arabica Grader. This initial step opened doors, but Johan's interest in coffee education led him to discover something more profound within CQI's offerings.

"In 2018, I found out that CQI had just launched a brand-new program called Q Processing, and I took this opportunity as quickly as I could. That one-week course deepened my passion and love for post-harvest processing. The rest, as they said, is history," Johan shared. Since becoming a CQI Post-Harvest Processing Instructor in 2019, Johan has been a steady presence supporting CQI's initiatives. His commitment goes beyond mere instruction; it extends to active involvement in donor-funded projects and events worldwide.

“I feel privileged to teach CQI courses and to work directly with coffee producers. It gives me personal satisfaction to see how my small contribution can support the livelihoods of those involved in coffee production. This is the real value of CQI, and it’s where the Q system truly shines! We don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk, improving coffee quality and the lives of the people who produce it,” Johan stated passionately.

“CQI has been key in shaping my coffee career and guiding my life. It has given me confidence in doing what I do best and a sense of belonging, like a home. That’s why I’m dedicated to contributing through projects, events, and more. It’s become a part of my life.”

Johan's dedication was tested during a donor-funded project course in the Philippines in 2023. Amidst the chaos of a devastating typhoon, Johan displayed remarkable resilience. Stranded without electricity for days, he improvised, transforming a motel into a makeshift classroom.

"We ended up conducting the course in the motel’s dining room. With a piece of white cloth hanging by the window as the projector screen, we managed to pull it off, and completed the entire course within the time frame! Let’s talk about 'where there is a will, there is a way,' huh!" Johan reflected on the challenging yet ultimately rewarding experience.

Looking ahead, Johan envisions a future where the Q Processing program becomes standard practice in post-harvest processing globally. He wishes to raise awareness about sustainable processing practices, ensuring a brighter future for coffee producers worldwide. His commitment to coffee education is so strong that he enthusiastically expressed his desire for the “25 years of service Q Instructor” pin from CQI in 2044, with a smile. As we celebrate Johan Kwe's achievements, we also acknowledge the invaluable role played by all CQI educators who are shaping the coffee landscape. Their passion, resilience, and commitment serve as guiding lights, inspiring all of us to strive for excellence in the sector.

Congratulations Johan, a true embodiment of the CQI spirit and our Educator of the Year for 2024!
