Earlier this year, we announced the beginning of Q Project Thailand – an exciting project with the goal of increasing coffee producer income and improving coffee quality in Thailand. This activity is the result of a cooperative coalition between CQI and Bolliger and Company and is funded by various Thai governmental entities.
Looking at the progress made thus far, and impactful CQI education that has been delivered to the first Cohort of students. Selected producers have had the opportunity to participate in education focusing on both the Quality Evaluation and Post-Harvest Processing programs.
Here is a recap of complete activities:
CQI Instructor Johan Kwe led a Post-Harvest Processing Good Practices Workshop from February 23-26 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
CQI Instructor Thomas Ameloot and Assistant Instructor Natchapat Srichandr led a series of trainings, including Intro to CQI Cupping, Understanding Tastes and Flavors, and Q Arabica Cupping Essentials from April 5 – 11, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. View the recap video here.
Thomas Ameloot (Q Instructor), Natchapat Sonia Srichandr (Q Assistant Instructor), and Steven Puwalski (Q Arabica Grader) carefully cupped coffees from the producers who joined the pilot project to select the best coffees to showcase at World of Coffee (WOC) in Athens, Greece from June 22-24, 2023.
On Thursday, June 22, 2023 - CQI and Q Project Thailand will host an event at World of Coffee Athens. At this event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the project and cup selected samples from producers who have participated in the project. From July 4-9, 2023, a select group of coffee producers will have the opportunity to become Q Arabica Graders, as we approach the third activity for this project. The Q Arabica Combo course will be taught by Thomas Ameloot (Q Instructor).
From July 13-16, 2023, CQI will be at the Thailand Coffee Fest 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. There, CQI will share more information about Q Project Thailand and opportunities for CQI Education in Thailand.
All activities have a similar goal - to train producers and processors in post-harvest processing best practices and quality evaluation standards so that they have the tools to produce high-quality specialty coffee and ultimately connect these producers to new markets.
